The First Immigrants

The very first immigrants were American Indians. They may have come across a land bridge from Asia to Alaska. Others may have come across oceans in small boats.

The Second

Explorers from many different countries were the next group to come to America.  Christopher Columbus opened up America for future immigrants. He was an Italian sailor exploring for Spain He first arrived in the Americas in 1492.

Third

In the early 1600s, England had too many people. Work was hard to get.

Sickness and hunger were common. And some escape to America.

The first settlement in America was Jamestown, Virginia. It was founded in 1607.

Its settlers were not hard workers. They refused to raise food, build, or do any other hard work. The colony’s leader, Captain John Smith, finally ordered them to “ work or starve”. After that, everyone worked.

Forth

The first groups of Africans were brought to Jamestown in 1619.

Fifth

In 1621 the Dutch set up a colony they called New Netherland. Its capital was New Amsterdam. Cozy tile-roofed houses lined its narrow streets. Within a few years more than a dozen languages could be heard on its busy streets. In 1664 the British captured New Amsterdam and renamed it “New York”.

Sixth

The first Jewish settlers in North America were twenty-three people who settled in New Amsterdam in 1654.

Seventh

In 1683 a small group of Germans founded the town of Germantown in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Germans were excellent farmers. Their ways of planting different crops every year and using fertilizer are still used today.

And people from all over the world are keeping coming and enjoy living in our United States of America!
